Spring Time in Bonnievale

When you go outside, you can smell spring time in the air.  The apricot trees are blooming, butterflies flutter by, the vineyards start to awake and the river is flowing with fish jumping in the streams.

I decided to write about Bonnievale in our first newsletter.  Bonnievale is my hometown and I would like to share the beauty with each and every one travelling on Route 62.

Bonnievale is situated approximately 200km from Cape Town, an easy drive for a weekend getaway.  With the Langeberg Mountain range on the one side and the Riviersonderend Mountain range on the other, Bonnievale is one of the most beautiful towns in the Western Cape.  Tourists often miss the town becauce it requires a short detour off Route 62, but it's well worth the effort whether from Robertson along the R317 or from Swellendam and Ashton along the R60.

While in Bonnievale, you can stock up on wine, cheese, fresh produce and even delicious tender steaks and wors.  You can bring the whole family with; there is something to do for everyone!  The kids can spend the day at Amanzi Farm Visits, mom and dad can do some wine tasting at the various wine cellars, grandma can have cake and tea at one of the coffee shops and grandpa can bring his fishing rod and relax on the banks of the Breede River while doing some bird watching.  For the more adventurous there is canoeing, 4 x 4 trails, a trip on the Breede River Goose, mountain biking and lots more.

If you are busy planning your dream wedding, take a look at Breede Escape.  They offer a relaxed country venue on a working farm with awesome views on the Langeberg Mountains.  Panoramic views ideal for photos. Big old Oak trees and others offer shade in the garden. Water featured garden with garden stream.  Reception area with 11 sliding doors from the dance floor and rest of the reception onto the wooden deck.  All night boma within walkin distance from the main building.  They also offer two River Camps right on the banks of the Breede to maximum 40 guests. Guests will have the use of a full River Camp if they do a booking. Each River Camp has separate sleeping huts, a lapa / kitchen area with indoor braai, a volley ball court and a campfire spot outside. Each River Camp provided with a couple of double kayaks. A shared trampoline between the River Camps offers fun for the younger ones or the more energetic!

You can choose between all kinds of accommodation:  Jan Harmsgat is a 5 Star Guesthouse, lots of Self – Catering (mostly 3 star, Toy Cottages offer 4 Star and 3 Star accommodation) options, Bed and Breakfast options and camping sites.  So you can go back to the basics with a camping weekend or a weekend full of treats at a 5 Star Guetshouse.

In Bonnievale you will find the leading authority of Grass Carp in South Africa, De Rust Grass Carp.  Grass carp is an exotic fish species and should be utilized with care.

The annual festival, Bonnievale Bonanza, will take place 4 – 5 November 2011.  This is a family festival, bring your bicycles and come enjoy the fresh air and scenery of this little town.
