Barrydale Karoo Hotel

Tucked into a fold of the Langeberg Mountains, Barrydale is one of the most charming dorpies on Route 62, with a hotel that puts the funk back into country. Just 2.5 hours from Cape Town, it’s a fascinating village, home to an eclectic population of long-time rural folk and escapees from corporate life smitten by the unique quality of light and serenity of the Klein Karoo, and the intimacy of a small town surrounded by soaring views.

Racing along the R62, it’s easy to bypass: Don’t. Turn off and head down the main road, easing to a halt in front of the Barrydale Karoo Hotel bar. Here you’ll find a classic South African scene, unchanged for 70 years, yet serving an impressive wine and whiskey list, not to mention a selection of ports produced in the Klein Karoo region. You could settle here, or in front of a crackling fire in the lounge, or wander across the road to Magpie, the internationally renowned design and décor shop. Or cut to the chase and take your pick from one of just 15 playfully decorated and character-filled hotel rooms.

Some are rural traditional, others eclectic fun; all are completely individually styled. Not a cookie cutter or bland interior decor touch in sight. Most are en suite, but for the budget hunter there are a handful that share pristinely clean bathrooms. Given its dinky size, not to mention unbelievably low rates, the hotel has become increasingly popular as an exclusive-use venue for those wanting to celebrate a special occasion, be it a birthday or anniversary. The room configuration and rates are tailor made to the requirements of some 30 friends and family (or more, if travelling with kids), as well as conference delegates seeking a hip yet peaceful respite.

Aside from wandering the picturesque village streets or hiking in the surrounding mountains, you could unwind in the nearby natural hot springs. Relax around the large pool or get down at one of regular live music events. Come as a stranger; leave as a friend. Because the Cape’s funkiest country hotel still offers that most vital ingredient: warm, old-fashioned Karoo hospitality.

Barrydale owes its existence to the vibrant trade that was established with farmers in the region in the late 1800s – and one of these products was brandy.  In 1941, the town’s first “official” brandy was made at the newly established Barrydale Cellar. Read more
